Join the People's Evacuation Plan

Our experience with Hurricane Gustav last year has taught us that our communities cannot depend on the government’s provisions alone. We are acting to ensure that our folks are not subject to the widespread discrimination, criminalization and post-evacuation economic disasters as they have been in the past.

That is why we are reaching out to our networks in the top cities where we tend to evacuate in order to prepare some provisions ahead of time, just in case. This grassroots preparation and support is what we are calling The People’s Evacuation Plan. Here’s how you can help:

Are there resources that you can help us put in place like hotel rooms, dorms, and other forms of emergency housing?

Would you be able to take up collections for food, gas cards, bus tickets, hygiene products?

Are there people in your city who have an interest in volunteering with organizations that are coordinating a local “People’s Evacuation Plan?”

Please let us know by email and please include your contact information. We are trying to gather a list of resources and contact people in each city in order to identify where the gaps are and how to best ensure that we can offer folks the needed refuge and security when evacuating to your city.
