What is the mission of Katrina Information Network (KIN)?
The Katrina Information Network (KIN) is a collaboration of groups in the Gulf and across the country dedicated to building power for Greater Accountability in Gulf Recovery. KIN has launched a virtual campaign to call attention to the ineffective actions taking place during the recovery effort. The campaign calls for grassroots pressure through e-advocacy, local resolutions and divestment to make just recovery a national priority.
Why has it taken government so long to help the survivors of Hurricane Katrina?
Government ineptitude and gross malfeasance have been the themes of the Hurricane Katrina recovery effort. Government has made a mockery of helping the people in the Gulf Coast region through stalled delivery of life-saving shelter and supplies, awarding contracts to companies that have demonstrated wasteful spending, mismanagement, and overcharging, and showing a general disregard for the welfare of the people of the region.
What action steps can I take to “Act Like Kin” and become a part of the solidarity movement to bring change in the Gulf Coast Region?
This is a call to action. Support the KIN solidarity campaign by participating in our virtual rallies and events, start a letter-writing campaign to your local and state government representatives to sign on and pass KIN’s resolution, host an event at your university and/or church to raise awareness and the profile of the ongoing tragedy the survivors of Hurricane Katrina are still enduring at the hands of policymakers.
What is the Solidarity Resolution and what can I do to help push it forward?
KIN’s solidarity resolution urges Congress and the President to act now to adequately fund just recovery for the residents of the Gulf Coast to include victims compensation, complete restitution, and a creating a formal, independent oversight commission with representation from communities hardest hit by the hurricane. Take part in the political process by starting your own campaign to get the KIN resolution heard in your state. KIN encourages every American to make his or her voice heard by contacting your local, state, and/or federal representatives to urge them to sign onto KIN’s Solidarity Resolution. You can access a copy of the resolution on our main web page, under Action Steps.
